Microsoft has announced Box app for Windows 10. Duncan Fisher who works for the mobile applications product management team at Box wrote in a Windows blogpost that with ‘50,000 paying businesses, including 52% of the Fortune 500 and more than 40 million users, it’s critical for Box to ensure that customers can work on their content across a wide variety of devices and platforms’.

The Box for Windows 10 app promises secure content along with features such as managing content across devices such as Windows PCs, tablets and phones, and also share files with anyone. It will allow previewing Office content easily including a variety of file types such as Office files, PDFs, images and more. Users can also create and collaborate on Office files and receive real-time updates.
“Under Satya Nadella, Microsoft has pushed boldly into a cloud-first, mobile-first world, opening up its platforms to integrate with best-of-breed tools (like Box) and improve the experience for their customers. This move has ultimately made it easy for enterprises to choose the vendors they want to work with, enabling more productivity and collaboration within the workplace,” Aaron Levie writes in a Box blogpost.
Box for Windows 10 also focuses on multitasking. It will allow users to work on Box and other apps side by side with the Windows 10 multitasking feature that will resize Box to make it as big or small as you need. Moreover, it also mentions the ability to pin certain Box files and favorites right to the Start screen using Windows 10 Live Tiles.
Box for Windows 10 app is now available in the Windows store for PCs and tablets. It is expected to be available for phones running Windows 10 soon.

Apple has released its Apple Music app on the Google Play Store, making it the second app from the Cupertino based company to be released on the rival Android platform, after ‘move to iOS’.
Announced at the WWDC, Apple Music is the company’s foray into music streaming segment which is lead by companies such as Spotify, Pandora, Rdio and so on.

Apple Music also brings an always on Beats 1 radio station to the table. Apple has tried to keep all its features from the iOS platform on to the Android platform, keeping the Android design elements in mind.

You get the same 3-month trial period with Apple Music after which you will be charged Rs 120 per month for individual use. This is the same price as is present on the iOS platform. But we did not notice any family plans for Android, which costs Rs 190 per month on the iOS platform. Users also get access to Beats Radio, Connect feature, Curated Playlists and so on.
Since Apple Music is still in the beta stage on Android, it will not come with certain features. For instance, streaming music videos is not an option on Android at the moment.

Also signing up for family memberships is not available on the Android app. Voice control is not present on the Apple Music beta app which is obvious considering there is no Siri on the Android platform. Google Now’s voice command will not work with Apple Music yet. Also you will not be able to play music stored on your phone using the Apple Music beta app – it does not work as a media player.

You will need to have an Apple ID to sign in and if you have made any purchases on iTunes using this Apple ID, then that music will be synced and be available under My Music. You can download songs, playlists as well as full albums for offline listening.

Speaking to TechCrunch, Eddy Cue, senior vice president of internet software and services for Apple said, “We’ve obviously been really excited about the response we’ve gotten to Apple Music. People love the human curation aspects of it, discovery, radio. But from the moment we got into music, many, many years ago, we’ve always wanted to do things for everyone when it came down to music. Part of that was letting you enjoy your music no matter where you were and what products you were using.”

YouTube’s new music-streaming service aims to use the site’s massive video collection to bury the competition with content.
Alphabet Inc launched the YouTube Music Mobile App on Wednesday, less than a month after rolling out YouTube Red, a $9.99 per month service that provides ads-free access to all YouTube services.
The move pits the digital video library against established streaming services in a battle YouTube executives say they are in position to win.
Spotify leads the market with approximately 20 million paid subscribers as of June, followed by Apple Music, which debuted in June and reported 6.5 million paid subscribers in October.
The YouTube app is free for all users but only YouTube Red accounts can access its full range of options.
Red users can turn data-sapping music videos into audio-only streams and listen to audio of all videos while multitasking on devices with the background mode function. They can also download songs to an in-app playlist that runs on or offline.
With or without Red, customers can see stations personalized according to songs, genres, artists and titles. They can find an artist’s complete album collection and see related items ranging from live performances to amateur covers.
YouTube artists also get a piece of the deal through a percentage of YouTube Red subscriptions. YouTube did not provide details but said the majority of revenue is paid to partners.
To avoid siphoning users from Google’s music-streaming store Play, users with subscriptions to either YouTube Red or Google Play can access either site.
T. Jay Fowler, YouTube’s head of music products and creator of Beats-owned MOG music streaming service, said a beta streaming service launched last year lead to an improved Red model and a plan to use content to drive deeper engagement.
“With this beta already in progress the data was there that showed there was an appetite for something different,” he said.
Unique amateur videos and a new virtual reality video format could give YouTube an advantage but all the bells and whistles may be too much for average users, said Cortney Harding, a consultant who links startups to the music industry.
“I think it’s going to be tricky because the music app is separate from YouTube Red, plus they have other separate apps,” Harding said. “If I’m a casual user I’m going to find that confusing.”

In a security breach, Islamic State of Iraq and Syria militants have reportedly hacked tens of thousands of Twitter accounts and posted phone numbers of CIA and FBI chiefs online as revenge for killing of a top hacker of the terror group.

Details of more than 54,000 Twitter accounts, including passwords, were published last week in what experts have described as a dangerous escalation of the global cyber war.
The group calling itself ‘Cyber Caliphate’, set up by ISIS member Junaid Hussain, encouraged its followers to seize control of the accounts and use them to spread Islamic State of Iraq and Syria propaganda, the Daily Express reported. Victims were forced to defencelessly watch as ISIS rhetoric appeared under their names.

The jihadists also posted personal details on the social media platform — including mobile phone numbers of the heads of the CIA, FBI and America’s National Security Agency (NSA), the report said. Most of those affected are based in Saudi Arabia, but some are feared to be British.
One victim, a half-British engineer based in Saudi Arabia was quoted as saying, “I am horrified at how they got hold of my details.”

Hussain, from Birmingham, steered the computer hacking division for the terror group before he was killed in August by a US drone carrying out a joint operation with Britain.

Since the extremist’s death the hacking group — which briefly hacked a Pentagon Twitter account earlier this year — appeared to keep a low profile. But after spending months reportedly gathering data, it reappeared on Twitter last Sunday declaring, “We are back.” The group also taunted the West before tweeting a link to the database of stolen Twitter accounts.

“We need years to publish what we have. We will raise our flag in the heart of Europe,” the group was quoted as saying. The account was quickly suspended by Twitter.

We’ve heard about Flipkart and Myntra’s move to go app only for a long time now. Over the past year, the thought behind an app only strategy has been weighed both from a business as well as consumer’s point of view.
Mostly, it is agreed that a business needs to be where consumers are. This seems to have been evident with the app exclusive sales that have happened during the festive season. While Flipkart decided to go app only, its competitor Amazon went with a mixed strategy between its website as well as app.
Sure the app only strategy cannot completely be ridiculed as having no basis, considering that a significantly high percentage of users are transacting via smartphones. While we have posed these questions in the past when Myntra decided to shut its website, what did stand out is the fact that a business was pushing its way on to consumers rather than give consumers the option to choose which platform suits them the best.
It turns out, Flipkart and Google are working together to create a new mobile optimised website that would aid smartphone users to continue shopping on the ecommerce platform without having to install an application. Moreover, users on platforms other than Android, or iOS could also transact via a mobile browser.
It appears that through the whole controversy around its app only strategy, Flipkart had lost out on an opportunity to convey to its user base that it really cared for its customers and would go the extra mile to ensure that they could continue to shop on the platform of their choice where they were most comfortable.
According to Recode, the launch of the Flipkart mobile site is also a win for Google. The rise of mobile apps effectively means the whole shopping experience is beyond the purview of Google’s search and advertising business which generates the most significant percentage of its revenue.
The Recode piece quotes Peeyush Ranjan, VP of Engineering at Flipkart who said that apps have the advantages of a cleaner interface and the advantage to stay offline. He added that despite these advantages, one significant challenge is that most users access the service via low-end smartphones that aren’t updated regularly. In stark contrast, to stay updated on a browser, a user simply needs to hit Refresh!
What’s interesting is that the partnership between Flipkart and Google to create Flipkart Lite has begun after ex-Googler Ranjan took over as the VP of Engineering at Flipkart.
We believe this move is a positive step and indicates that sense has finally prevailed at Flipkart. For consumers, this also indicates that shopping won’t necessarily mean installing another app, but could be a matter of choice between an app or the good old browser.

Google has open sourced TensorFlow, a key algorithm that helps it with voice recognition, image search with Google Photos and several projects in automated image captioning.

According to a post in its official blog, Jeff Dean, Senior Google Fellow, and Rajat Monga, Technical Lead at Google Research said “we’re proud to announce the open source release of TensorFlow – our second-generation machine learning system, specifically designed to correct these shortcomings.”

According to Google Research, TensorFlow is general, flexible, portable, easy-to-use, and completely open source. The blogpost added that this move has happened while improving upon DistBelief’s speed, scalability, and production readiness. The post added that according to some benchmarks, TensorFlow is twice as fast as DistBelief.

According to a post in the Christian Science Monitor, a neural network allows the Google Photos app to learn the relationship between an object’s name and its appearance. This allows Google Photos to identify a cat within a photo based on similar pictures it’s seen before. Similarly, another neural network allows the Google Translate app to learn how words are commonly used in conversation, so it can provide less-stilted renderings.

The Google Research blog post added that TensorFlow is ready for use in real products too. It added that TensorFlow was built from the ground up to be fast, portable, and ready for production service and can help you move your idea seamlessly from training to your desktop GPU and even running it on your mobile phone.

TensorFlow also lets you get started quickly with powerful machine learning tech by using Google’s example model architecture.

Although the tech titan has expanded extensively from its roots, it’s no secret that Google still leans heavily on its core service as a search engine. Unfortunately for them, the mobile revolution has drastically changed the way that people locate information, and just this summer, mobile searches finally outstripped searches on personal computers in the U.S. and nine other countries.

Needless to say, this represents a pretty big problem for Google.

Nevertheless, the sultan of search has tackled this dilemma head-on. At the Code/Mobile conference this week, Google’s Amit Singhal announced that Google has now indexed over 100 billion in-app links, making them searchable. 40% of Android apps indexed in this way will now show up on mobile search results. This development may create friction between Google and Apple, who have had a lengthy search deal that is scheduled to expire in 2015. Apple is currently working to deliver a similar search feature to iPhone users that would display relevant information from the App Store at the top of mobile searches.

Google demonstrating their ability to index in-app pages is an important step. Investors had previously been concerned about the growing shift from internet searches to in-app searches, and app developers needed proof that handing over their pages to Google is worth it. This is looking like good news for both parties. Optimizing search capabilities for mobile devices has long been a tough nut to crack. The traditional approach of leaning on keywords and providing relevant advertisements doesn’t work as well on mobile devices, where the smaller screen limits keyword-based ads.

Earlier this year, Google implemented a new feature that uses a panel of relevant images at the top of searches that can be scrolled through for similar content and related products. Integrating in-app content with web searches is a large step forward in making mobile searching better for users and advertisers alike.

Andy Rubin helped build the most widely-adopted mobile operating system in the world, and now he’s looking to the future.

Andy Rubin
When the Android co-founder left Google back in October 2014, his decision wasn’t necessarily surprising by any means. After all, he played a big role in how most folks around the world connect with each other, so it only makes sense that he would continue his goal to push technology forward as best as he can. We already know of Rubin’s new hardware startup incubator called Playground Global, but how will that help push technology forward in the future? During his talk at Code/Mobile earlier today, we got a good look at what the Father of Android has in store for us.

When asked about the future of technology and computing, Rubin explained that the next big frontier has to do with technology that doesn’t necessarily have to have a screen, such as dishwashers or traffic lights. He’s talking about automation, artificial intelligence, and machines that can take the place of something a person used to do.

What I learned [at Google] is, assuming that the cloud and computing is going to evolve at a rapid pace, neural networks, deep learning and machine learning are also going to continue to evolve. There is a point in time – I have no idea when it is – where there is some form of AI that will be the next computing platform.
“Robotics and automation are going to permeate in our lives”, Rubin continues. And it’s clear that he’s pretty invested in this idea, too. Playground Global just recently invested a massive $15 million in CastAR, an augmented reality startup that’s based in Mountain View, California, among a few other notable projects.

This doesn’t particularly mean that mobile is going away anytime soon, though. Since mobile devices are so personal and in our pockets at all times, he believes that our smartphones will remain the main screen in our lives. Basically, the technology world needs to progress, and the next step, he says, is the introduction of artificial intelligence into our lives. That’s where we’ll see the next big push.

What is machine learning?

Rubin went on to talk about what Android has accomplished in its lifetime, and that he’s proud of the team at Google that decided to make Android an open OS. He pointed out that he’s pretty amazed at what you can purchase nowadays that runs Android – phones, tablets, televisions, smartwatches and more. But when asked if there was room for a third major operating system in the mobile space, he explained:

When we pitched Android, we had a deck that said

“the world doesn’t need another mobile operating system”.

What the world needed was an open operating system. Once you have an open system, innovation will be built on top of it. And it came true!

“The worst thing that would happen from a product perspective would be slowing down innovation,” said Rubin. Not that innovation is dead, by any means, but it has slowed down in recent years. He goes on to say that the most recent interesting thing that’s happened in the technology space in the United States is that users are no longer forced to sign a contract with a mobile service provider.

.
Previously, you’d walk into your local carrier store, sign up for a new phone number, pay a reduced price for your phone, and then be locked into a two-year contract. Now, with these new types of payment plans such as T-Mobile’s Jump!, AT&T’s Next program and even Apple’s iPhone Upgrade Program you can save money by either leasing a phone through a carrier or making monthly payments on the full price of that phone. He continues:
The carriers have always been “hit makers” — they choose which phones they’ll sell and which will be successful. They thought they had the pulse on what consumers wanted, but they’re not necessarily product companies.
[This new system] makes the U.S. look a lot more like China. 80 percent of phones in China are sold open market (not through a wireless carrier). We’re at the beginning, but the U.S. could look more like that in the future.
He also touched on the big “F” word in the Android community…fragmentation. This has been a huge point of contention among fans of mobile technology for some time. During the Q&A section of the talk, when asked if fragmentation was good for consumers, he explained that he doesn’t like to use the word ‘fragmentation’ because it has a negative connotation. He says, “I prefer ‘consumer choice’ as the positive side.” Instead of looking at Android through a fragmented lens, he decided to ask the question “should we write for one screen size?”

And that’s definitely worked out to Android’s advantage, too. This decision to not base Android around one screen size enabled the OS to reach automobiles, televisions, watches and more faster than any other company could.

Before wrapping up the big talk, Rubin touched on some of the things he finds to be too cumbersome in the IoT (Internet of Things) space. For instance, going to bed at night and plugging in five devices isn’t a good experience for the consumer. “As it scales, your door lock, security system, toaster oven, you have to be really careful and thoughtful about how much tech you adopt. I think one of the dangers is one company providing all the tech in your home. The real question is how to do you create interoperability without making the consumer frustrated.”

What are your thoughts on the future of mobile devices? Will they diminish in importance, or will they remain prevalent in our lives through the adoption of artificially intelligent machines? Speak up in the comment section!

Just as BlackBerry is looking to make an interesting change to its smartphone business, CEO John Chen has indicated that the company may consider exiting the handset market altogether, if its device division can’t turn a profit in the next year. The company has already stated that it is not opposed to abandoning handset operations if they remain unprofitable, but has previously steered clear of providing a time frame.

Chen also indicated that the company may consider dropping support for its BlackBerry 10 operating system after a year or two, providing that it can bring all of the security features over to Android. The company plans to support both operating systems in the near future. Even if BlackBerry was to exit the smartphone business, it may end up providing security options for Android via software.

“Sometime next year we have to make our device business profitable, otherwise I have to rethink what I do there. My job is to make sure the value of the company is protected and increases.” – BlackBerry CEO John Chen

The statements come ahead of the launch of the Android powered BlackBerry Priv, which is expected to arrive before the end of 2015. The handset features unique a slide out keyboard, as well as combining some of BlackBerry’s security and productivity tools with the popular Android OS.

The move over to Android will help address the lack of app available with BlackBerry’s current handsets and could help the company to sell a lot more phones.

However, BlackBerry is still heavily invested in provided additional security features for the enterprise market and sees plenty of value left to be added in that market segment.

Given that BlackBerry smartphones now make up less than 1 percent of the global market, the move into Android and a single year to turn a profit seems like a bit of a last change saloon. BlackBerry states that it needs to sell around 5 million smartphones to return a profit.

BlackBerry is not the only smartphone company that may consider leaving the market if it can’t turn a profit in 2016. Sony recently made a similar statement about its own handset line-up, which has make a loss for successive quarters. Meanwhile, Nokia is expected to return to the smartphone market next year.

2016 is shaping up to be a key year for a number of legacy smartphone manufacturers.
Do you think that the Priv will pay off for BlackBerry?

Wearables still aren’t anywhere near as widespread use as smartphones, but the CEO of Jawbone, Hosain Rahman believes that they’re going to be. Moreover, he thinks it’s likely that we’ll be putting sensors inside our own bodies that will interact with a slew of devices at some point in the future.
At a conference on Wednesday, he explained that the use of wearables will contribute substantially to what is called the Internet of Things, which is the increased commonality of smart devices that are able to communicate with each other.

Jawbone has been investing a considerable amount of resources into developing internal sensors, said Rahman. The company has also been researching fitness sensors that the user would swallow or implant. These sensors would remain in a user’s bloodstream and would be capable of actively monitoring a variety of factors. Basically, the idea is that these sensors could be used to interact with other smart devices like thermostats, by telling the thermostat if our body is too warm or cold and adjusting according, and the list goes on.

These sensors would remain in a user’s bloodstream and would be capable of actively monitoring a variety of factors.

Of course, the concept of implanted wearables isn’t new. Last year, Brian McEvoy showcased an embedded compass, and Grindhouse Wetwear revealed their embedded, Bluetooth-capable computer system “Circadia.” It looks very likely that human-integrated technology is going to be a very real part of our everyday experience. Rahman certainly agrees.

“Wearables are going to be at the center of that and they’re going to make all of these things smart,” said Rahman. “If I know your blood alcohol level, I can tell your car not to turn on.” Whether or not we want our wearables to have that much control over our lives is debatable, but there are certainly some positive implications as well (like preventing drinking and driving).

Jawbone is responsible for the Up line of fitness trackers, and they have found themselves in the position of competing not only with other fitness devices (like Fitbit), but also against wearables like Android Wear and the Apple Watch. Although the wearables market is expected to expand by 300% in the next five years, becoming a $25 billion industry, Rahman said that Jawbone no longer considers itself a hardware company. Their future endeavors are expected to focus primarily on software, such as their upcoming Up app for wearable devices.

We have to ask, would you be “okay” with the idea of a wearable that lives inside of you? Do you think that wearables are the future, and are you excited or afraid of a future where such wearable (or rather, ingestible) sensors actively communicate with the other devices around us?

Google is seeking to make mobile webpages load “instantaneously” with a new venture known as the Accelerated Mobile Pages (AMP) Project. The scheme, which Google announced yesterday in a blog post, would also improve how webpages integrate content such as animations, videos and ads

AMP is based on existing web technologies and Google claims that anyone can use it. It's currently working with more than 30 publishers – including Twitter, Pinterest and LinkedIn – to develop the project, and these will be among the first to integrate AMP HTML pages.

While faster and more intuitive websites would no doubt be better for the consumer, Google readily admits that improved advertising opportunities are the driver for the creation of AMP.

“Every time a webpage takes too long to load, they lose a reader – and the opportunity to earn revenue through advertising or subscriptions,” wrote Google in a statement. “Ads help fund free services and content on the web. With Accelerated Mobile Pages, we want to support a comprehensive range of ad formats, ad networks and technologies.”

Are you looking forward to an instant web-browsing experience, complete with better ad integration? Let us know in the comments.
